My 8-year-old self was mesmerised by Richard Burton’s narration in Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of HG Well's "The War of the Worlds".
Through over-ear 'cans', Burton's rich baritone voice physically took up residence in my head. The voice of the Welsh valleys vibrated through my human (skull) subwoofer and inspired me, just as the vibrating manifestation of his orchestra inspired deaf composer Ludwig van Beethoven.
Quiet and close-up is where perfect, intimate performances happen, but one can only achieve such perfection, with a multitude of imperfections.
The croaks and cracks that suggest age and experience, emotion or world-weariness; deviations in pitch that turn innocent into ominous, or with tone of voice, terrifying.
The deep lows of the human voice play host to the entire gamut of human emotion, and our ability to control and change intention and interpretation through tiny, nuanced variation, is why the human voice remains our most powerful instrument, and something that will never be matched, and certainly never bettered, by anything artificial.
